Edward Cheserek Headlines 2019 Carlsbad 5000By Adam Kopet Edward Cheserek is scheduled to compete April 7 at the Carlsbad 5,000, according to race organizers. Cheserek, who won 17 NCAA titles while at Oregon and owns a 3:49.44 indoor mile best, will test himself in one of the fastest road 5K races in the world. The Carlsbad 5000 has been a fixture of the road racing scene in Southern California since 1986. The event record stands at 13:00, run twice by Kenya's Sammy Kipketer in 2000 and 2001. The race features new ownership this year by a group that includes Meb Keflezighi. Cheserek ran 13:08.05 last month in an indoor 5,000-meter race in Boston. That performance was 10 seconds faster than his outdoor best, which he set his freshman year at Oregon when he placed a close second at the 2014 NCAA Division 1 Outdoor Championships. |
