When it came to the 5-kilometer road race world record, after a thorough review, it was determined “King Ches” would also be sharing the throne with Switzerland’s Julien Wanders.

Cheserek won the men’s elite race in 13 minutes, 29 seconds, equaling the record established Feb. 17 in Monaco by Wanders. The meet record for the annual event on the streets Carlsbad remains 12:59.5 in 2000 by fellow Kenyan Sammy Kipketer, as the IAAF only introduced the 5-kilometer road distance as being eligible for a world record in November 2017.

The official time for Cheserek, a Skechers professional, rendered from the starting gun was 13:28.5. A pair of hand timers had the former Oregon star and 17-time NCAA champion crossing the finish line in 13:28.8 and 13:28.9, respectively, thus the times being rounded up to its final mark for IAAF road race record purposes.

Cheserek, who prevailed by 25 seconds over fellow countrymen David Bett, became the 10th Kenyan male athlete in meet history to capture the title, including the first since Lawi Lalang prevailed in 2015. American Reid Buchanan finished third in 13:56, with Hassan Mead placing fifth in 14:03.

Lokedi, the reigning NCAA Division 1 outdoor 10,000-meter champion, prevailed in her professional road race debut after concluding her collegiate career for Kansas with an 11th-place finish March 9 in the 5,000 at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala.

Lokedi bounced back in impressive fashion Sunday, prevailing in 15:48 to become the seventh Kenyan female to secure victory in Carlsbad, including the second in three years after Violah Lagat triumphed in 2016.

Both Cheserek and Lokedi, who have been dating for a couple of years, each received a winner’s prize of $5,000, with the overall purse increasing to $24,000 this year, boosted from $10,900 last year. It marked the first Kenyan sweep of the elite races at the annual event since Sally Barsosio and Kipketer achieved the feat in 2001.

Saucony professional Charlotte Arter of Great Britain took second in 16:00, with first-year professionals representing HOKA ONE ONE Northern Arizona Elite, Danielle Shanahan and Alice Wright, taking third and fourth in 16:03 an 16:05.

Shanahan and Wright are scheduled to return to the track April 19, both expected to compete in the 5,000 meters at the 61st Mt. SAC Relays at El Camino College in Torrance, Calif.

Arter and Lokedi are slated to race May 2 at the Payton Jordan Invitational, most likely in the 10,000, at Stanford’s Cobb Track and Angell Field in Palo Alto, Calif.
